Like many, I started my Pilates journey by opening Google and searching for Pilates near me. What I learned was that Hills District Pilates classes were few and far between at the time, and there wasn’t much outside of a big gym setting (which I tried for a while but found that wasn’t ultimately for me). Being the mum of young kids (at the time), working full time and in need of some self care and a pilates for lower back pain, I was looking for more convenience and if possible a small local business to support. And that’s how I found myself in a garage conversion studio, attending Pilates mat classes in Beaumont Hills, right around the corner from where I lived.
It was fabulous. The instructor was knowledgeable, and knew just what to do or say to help me escape for an hour and feel refreshed, mind and body (not without a few complaining muscles, mind you). She’d cultivated a small community of clients, who really felt more like a family, meeting once or twice a week for class. Over the weeks and months of pilates practice, I felt my aches and pains become manageable, my body strengthen and my patience, tolerance and stress levels improve as well. There’s definitely something to the mind body spirit connection in pilates practice! In Pilates I found my preferred form of self care, a hobby that offered multiple solutions (me-time, exercise, back pain relief, friendships) in just those one or two hours a week.
Over the years, that hobby became a passion. And so it was a natural transition to become an instructor myself, which ultimately helped to keep this little community going when the original instructor moved interstate. Not only witnessing how pilates helped me with my backpain, but seeing its affect on a variety of aliments in my classmates, I realised how powerful Pilates can be in recovery and rehabilitation, as well as general exercise.
So to round out the story, more than a few years on with a diploma in pilates studio and rehabilitation in hand, I’m now teaching Pilates in Rouse Hill, the Hawkesbury and also in my own garage conversion pilates studio in Box Hill. I love that this passion allows me the opportunity, to help others feel better by finding improvement in flexibility, range of movement, lengthening and strengthening, for general health and well-being, or targeted exercise to support functional movement. And of course I love that it gives me the availability to support my family both near and far, as well as the opportunity to run my own local small business.
Why not try out a pilates class near you? It may just change your life for the better!
